I noticed THIS ARTICLE in Thursday's newspaper. It's about the formation of gay/straight alliances in local schools. Good idea, and I'm not arguing against it, but there's two things which come to mind. One is that bullying frequently has nothing much to do with a particular attribute of the victim (sexuality, hair colour, ethnicity, etc.); they are just the excuses used. Secondly, it would be good if even at school age, kids could get the message that sexuality isn't set in stone, that it isn't just a big group of straight people and a little group of gay people. I suppose they get taught something more liberal than that (I would hope so, anyway) but the idea still seems to prevail that there's a dividing line with a few fence-sitters perched on it and everyone else on either one side or the other.

Meanwhile, I continue my letter-writing to the local papers. There have been some particularly stupid and bigoted letters recently, and it gives me great pleasure to craft polite putdowns.

My letter-writing campaign reached a natural conclusion. One opponent had the last say. I planned to answer him but time passed and besides, his letter was so remarkably stupid that I figured most clear-headed people would see how stupid it was.

Anyway, since then a few people have mentioned to me how much they enjoyed reading the letters, so I'm hoping I got some minds ticking over.

In answer to the question in the title of this thread, plainly "we" are, some of us anyway. I just don't get why people feel so threatened but clearly they do. Mindless thuggery.

Thanks for the link, Todd.

Yes, that's exciting news as the dominos keep falling! But on the minus side, it's now illegal to be gay in Uganda - you risk imprisonment and even death sadx It's even a crime (punishable by imprisonment) to fail to dob in any gay people you know about. This law was pushed by the peak body of Ugandan churches. I can't begin to say how disgusted I am by these so-called Christians.
